As a culmination to your study of adding fractions and mixed numbers with uncommon denominators, have your students create Fraction Animals! Students are tasked with creating an animal, creature, or scene using fraction pieces. Fraction pieces include: halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, and twelfths (they all have a common denominator of 24). Students are asked to create a fraction animal, creature or scene abiding by the following requirements:
- They must use at least 4 different fractional amounts
- Their fractions must add up to be greater than 1 whole
- They may not use an entire whole of the same fractional amount (For example, they may not use 8 eighths. They must find a way to substitute some of those eighths for other fractional amounts. For example, they could instead use 1/2 and 4/8 instead of 8/8.)
Students love this project and come up with some creative things!
