In 4th grade, students learn about fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, and how to convert those to decimals. In this activity, students are creating a patchwork quilt by coloring in a design on a quilt square. They can use from 2-4 colors. After coloring their square, they will complete a "Quilt Artist Slip" that will ask them to write the fraction of a certain color, as well as the decimal form of it.
This was a fun activity to use with students to engage them in their creativity and math at the same time! When teaching this lesson, I also took the time to teach students about the history of quilts! After all students completed this quilt square, we glued everything together to create our classroom quilt (seen in pictures!)
I hope that you and your students enjoy this activity!
