This is a flexible math activity that matches the second grade standards for fractions. Teachers can choose from three different options for the activity, or set up three different centers, or do the activity up to three times with different directions. The activities are:
1. Following oral directions for dividing rectangular flags into different fractions and coloring accordingly (simplest activity).
2. Creating original flags using fractions and writing the fractions used in each flag.
3. Following written directions for dividing rectangular flags into different fractions and coloring accordingly (extension activity for readers who are on grade level and understand fractions well) - these are real flags from around the world and can be connected with geography by having students locate on a map.
Answer key is included for activity #3, but answers for activities #1 and #2 will vary.
