For students to better understand computation of fractions, they must understand that fractions are numbers. Students need to recognize that fractions are composed of unit fractions. They must also understand that fractions can be decomposed into multiple ways. This activity, Getting to the Whole, will help to develop these vital fraction concepts.
In this activity, students make hops on a number line to arrive at the number one. As students play the game, they should record their equations to show multiple ways of composing fractions to make the whole number one.
This resource includes two versions of Hoppin' to the Whole. Both versions are played in the same manner. The second version includes fractions of eights and twelfths and reinforces equivalencies of fractions.
Directions for both versions, recording sheets, and spinners are included.
