This fractions activity can be used as a single lesson, a unit overview, a take home project, or a math center. Common Core is requiring students to build deeper knowledge and make connections to real life situations. This activity takes fractions and makes them relevant by bringing in something all kids love - cake!
The Fraction Gourmet Bakery has students create their own customized cakes by combining slices of various other cakes. The catch is though that all of the slices are cut into different fractions, so students must find a way to add them together to ensure that they arrive at one whole cake (no more, no less).
On a personal note, I have done this with students as young as 4th grade (gifted) and up to 7th graders. Based on the age and abilities you can adjust the requirements as necessary, but it is an excellent way to bring fractions to life. I always required my students to create colorful and detailed menus and I would count it as a major project grade. Based on their products and ability to explain to me their thinking in the math operations, I had a good idea as to whether they had a strong understanding of fractions.
