Product Description
Help your students become proficient with equivalent fractions with this set of task cards and printables that focus on fractions of a set.

This set complements Fraction Matchin': Set A, which focuses on fractions of a rectangular whole.

Fraction Matchin' – equivalent fractions task cards + printables (set a)

The journal insert, task cards, and equivalent fraction task in this set are unique, so if you purchased (or want to purchase) Fraction Matchin': Set A, the materials in this set are not a repeat of any of the materials in the first set.

Fraction equivalency is a major concept in the Common Core State Standards for Math in the intermediate grades, and a strong understanding of fraction equivalence lays the foundation for addition and subtraction of fraction with unlike denominators in fifth grade. The task cards, journal insert, and activity sheets will provide your students with practice with key fraction standards in the Common Core.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics addressed:
Number and Operations – Fractions (3.NF, 4.NF)
• Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line. (3.NF.3a)
• Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. (3.NF.3b)
• Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions. (4.NF.1)

Included in this bundle are:
• 32 task cards
• reference sheet
• 2 assessment tasks
• assessment task rubric and scoring guide

Use the journal inserts to help show students different visual models for comparing equivalent fractions – represented with rectangular models. Then, have your students work in pairs, small groups, or on their own to work through the 32 task cards. [You can even use the cards for a quick game of Scoot!] The focus on four specific denominators (8, 9, 10, and 12) will allow your students to receive multiple exposures to the same fractions, building their automaticity with recognizing equivalent fractions.

Once the students have practiced with equivalent fractions, use one or both of the included two-page equivalent fraction assessments to assess your students' understanding of fraction equivalency when examining sets.
