This game is meant to be used as a math center activity, after students have been introduced to basic fractions. The basic game correlates to the 3rd grade Common Core State Standards. It involves fractions using 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 as the denominator. The matching picture cards require students to identify fractions as either the shaded part of a whole, or the shaded part of a group. The basic game includes 46 playing cards (23 each of fraction cards and picture cards).
Also included are bonus challenge cards to allow for differentiation. These cards include fractions with denominators 5, 7, 9, 10, and 12. There is also a bonus set of cards that uses improper fractions. Each of these versions includes 48 playing cards (24 each of fraction cards and picture cards).
In addition to the memory game, the cards can be used for many other fraction activities. Try having students order the cards from least to greatest, or use the cards for an equivalent fraction sort.
