This activity was designed for a 6th grade math class, but could be used with advanced 5th graders or for review with 7th and 8th graders. This 1 page pdf contains 4 sets of 6 cards each, for a total of 24 cards. The 6 card sets are all fraction operation problems which, when solved, have equivalent answers. There are 4 different sets. This is a great activity for partners and teams to share to work on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. It is a self-checking activity, as all problems must be part of one of the four groups. There are mixed numbers in adding and subtracting, but no mixed numbers in the multiplying or division problems, though the answers may be mixed numbers or improper fractions.
This was a highly-engaging activity with students eager to sort the cards into appropriate groups.
While my students sorted and glued the strips onto a poster to show their work, one set could be used in a variety of ways:
a. Partners or groups sort all 24 cards into groups
b. Every student in the class gets a card and they find their "group" by finding those who are equivalent. (6 team members)
c. Every student in the class gets a card and the students have to find 3 other people who are NOT equivalent to each other to form a group. (4 team members)
The pdf comes with the groups already put together (as a built in answer key). Teachers would need to print the pages and cut the strips before sharing with students.
Advice: Printing each set on different colors will help keep groups from being mixed. You can easily laminate these to be used over and over.
