This is an activity I have done with my class when introducing fractions. Each student gets a snack with four different ingredients (marshmallows, crackers, pretzels, and skittles) and uses them to create fractions to answer several questions. I begin this "lab" as a whole class activity and then end with students working in partners. This activity could also be done in a smaller group, such as a center activity. It can be used as review before starting a fraction unit or as further practice for struggling students that need to see another way to understand the concept of fractions.
