Product Description
This Fraction Sort Game will build reasoning and estimation skill for students as they learn to compare and order mixed numbers.

Each student is given a different game mat and a deck of 10 fraction cards. Students sort the fractions into one of five buckets based on size.

By sorting fractions in this way, students will be able to develop their own strategies for judging the size of a fraction. Build in a discussion after each round of the game and you'll hear kids say "I know this mixed number is almost 2 wholes because the fraction is 9/10 and the numerator and denominator are very close to each other" or "I put this fraction in the 'close to 4-1/2' bucket because I know half is 4/8 so 5/8 would be close to half." The game lends itself to rich dialogue and countless opportunities for discovery.

This product includes:
⇒Teacher Implementation Guide
⇒8 Unique Game Mat
⇒8 Unique Decks of 10 Fraction Cards (80 total cards)

This game can be used whole group, as a math center, or as a challenge activity for early finishers.

Use it before you teach students other methods of comparing fractions (i.e. draw a picture, common denominators, etc.) and you will see the substantial difference in their number sense when using other strategies.

The game is designed for 4th- 5th grade, but could also be used for any fraction unit in 6th or 7th grade where students need a better conceptual understanding of the size of fractions.
