Spelling words with a fraction twist.
This is a great spelling activity if you are studying fractions or for any time. This helps students to cement the understanding of fractions in terms of parts of a whole and to help them to challenge each other with the fraction sums they just created themselves with their spelling list.
Each spelling word will make two fractions -
The 'whole' is made up of the amount of the individual letters (the denominator of both fractions)
The parts are split into consonants and vowels which become the numerators of the two fractions.
This document is an editable Word Doc so you can change the example to be whatever word you want (ie. one of your spelling words).
I used this on display on the Interactive Whiteboard during the first session so students could see the example.
As an extension for older students: they can challenge each other to answer the sums from two different words. This can include finding the answers as mixed fractions, and also finding the common multiple of different denominators so they can add them.
I hope you like it :)
