This activity was created as an independent “center” for students to access independently for skill practice. Use one task sheet each day during the week for students to solve. The word problem is the same for 5 days. Only the data changes each day. As the week progresses, students become stronger with the concept as they repeatedly use the same procedures with new data. This helps to reinforce decomposing a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way (4.NF.B.3 b). This could also be used as an activity for students to use a month or so after instruction on the indicator to keep skills fresh. We all know that students “forget” what was taught to them either the year before, or even just months before. This activity will keep the concepts fresh and current in your student’s minds. Pull this activity out every few months as a refresher. I will create additional task cards with a variety of denominators as companions to this activity. If you have suggestions or requests, just ask, and I can customize them for your classroom. I create all of my own graphics as well. Check them out in my store. They can be customized as well.
