This product is intended to help children practice adding and subtracting fractions.
As children work through the cards, they will move from easier to more difficult problems. There are 108 cards that make up 9 mini groups. Groups 1-5 address different levels of adding fractions and groups 6-8 address different levels of subtracting fractions. All the groups highlight different aspects of the Common Core Standards 4.NF.B.3. and 5.NF.A.1.
Here’s a quick look at the content covered in each mini set:
Each mini group is color-coded and has a different design so that it is easy for the teacher to group the cards into different combinations.
Mini Group 1
covers problems 1-12 and provides practice in decomposing fractions into a sum of fractions.
Mini Group 2
covers problems 13-24 and provides practice in adding simple fractions with like denominators.
Mini Group 3
covers problems 25-36 and provides practice in adding fractions and reducing the sums to their simplest form.
Mini Group 4
covers problems 37-48 and provides practice in adding fractions with unlike denominators.
Mini Group 5
covers problems 49-60 and provides practice in adding mixed numbers.
Mini Group 6
covers problems 61-72 and provides practice in subtracting simple fractions with like denominators.
Mini Group 7
covers problems 73-84 and provides practice in subtraction fractions with unlike denominators.
Mini Group 8
covers problems 85-96 and provides practice in subtraction mixed numbers.
Mini Group 9
covers problems 97-108 and is a challenge set that provides practice in adding 3 fractions.
These cards are designed to be used in 4 different ways:
1. They can be used in a math center where students can work independently through the task cards, write their answers on the Answer Recording Sheet, and check their work with the Answer Key.
2. The cards can be broken up into their mini groups and a specific skill can be pulled for the teacher to use with a small group.
3. Instead of cutting up the cards, the cards can be left as 4 problems per sheet. 1 or 2 sheets can be sent home with a Homework Recording Sheet and the students can complete the work for extra practice.
4. At the back of the packet, there is a Scoot Recording Sheet that provides 30 spaces. This recording sheet can be used with any combination of cards. The teacher just needs to set out the combination she/he wants, give each student a recording sheet, and then utilize the packet’s Answer Key to check the students’ work.
What this packet includes:
• Title page
• Instructional page
• 108 task cards
• Answer recording sheet
• Homework recording sheet
• Scoot recording sheet
• Answer key
Out of the 36 pages, in this packet, 31 are print ready and can be reusable. These cards look best in color, but can work fine in gray scale.
