Fraction Word Problems Demystified - Unique and Original Five Step Method!
Most math teachers will agree that even if they can successfully navigate the choppy waters of fraction computation and teach their students how to perform all operations with fractions, the same students will suddenly appear dazed and confused when a fraction problem involving complete sentences is placed before them. With this in mind, this product offers an innovative, straightforward, easy-to-teach, five-step method to critically evaluate and solve fraction word problems (see Fraction Word Problems Demystified! – Five-Step Method, Notes, Worksheets
for the complete unit including multiple worksheets of increasing complexity). These five steps are referred to as D.E.O.E.G. and represent the easy-to-remember, rhyming steps that include:
– Using underlines, circles, boxes, and x’s, highlight the important parts of the problem.
– About how large should your answer be? Draw a picture and think it through to help you. Do this BEFORE you choose how to operate.
Choose how you’ll Operate
– Will you add, subtract, multiply, or divide, and in which order will you put the numbers? Use your estimation to help determine the correct operation. Solve a simpler problem using whole numbers first if necessary.
– Perform the calculations (showing all work) to come up with an answer to the problem.
Is your answer Great?
– Check your answer for reasonableness, make sure it matches your estimate, and be sure you put proper units on it to make your answer complete. If it is not reasonable, go back to the start, find your mistake, and redo.
Fraction Word Problems Demystified – Five-Step Method
introduces students to the D.E.O.E.G. problem solving method via detailed instructions to the teacher, a warm-up activity designed to demonstrate the need for a step-by-step word-problem-solving process, and two pages of guided notes that the teacher walks through with the students. It is the precursor to Fraction Word Problems Demystified! – Five-Step Method, Notes, Worksheets
. This product, structured as a complete 7-10 day unit, consists of the five-step method, warm-up activities, guided notes pages, and scaffolded worksheets with detailed keys that progressively increase in difficulty and enable students to solve sophisticated fraction word problems using all four operations.
Embark on this fraction word problem journey with your students and you will find that they will develop a logical way of critically thinking through and attacking problems that will benefit them for many years to come!
Good luck in your use of Fraction Word Problems Demystified – Five-Step Method!
