Help your students to develop a conceptual understanding of fractions with these Fraction Work Mats! Students will deepen their understanding of fractions, as well as compare fractions, generate equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions, and multiply fractions by a whole number. These are great for RTI interventions! Work mats are available for included fraction strips or store bought fraction strips.


How is the different from traditional printables or math units?

As I teach fractions, I always have a few students who need more time, support, and scaffolding than what is provided in the unit. These students may need the extra support for a variety of reasons: slow processing, learning disabilities, conceptual gaps, etc. Whatever the reason, I strive to provide these students additional learning opportunities to allow them to access their grade level standards.These fraction work mats were designed for this need. The work mat activities give students highly scaffolded learning opportunities to help develop a conceptual understanding of fractions that will allow students to apply that understanding in more abstract fraction tasks and problem solving activities. I do not use these work mats with whole group instruction. Instead, I reserve the work mats for small group instructions with my students who need extra support. The work mats are also not designed for independent practice, as these students need interaction and guided questions with the teacher. I have created the fraction work mats to complement my fraction units, but they may be easily used with any fraction unit. With each set of lessons, I have included multiple fraction mats that increase in difficulty.
