This is a zip-file of 2 separate PDFs that show a visual representation of finding a fraction of a set. There is a sheet that demonstrates completed models, a sheet that has the model gradually released for students to complete, and then a set of 16 task cards for kids to try. Each problem is designed to have a set of items that is a multiple of the denominator of the fraction (so 1/6 of 18, for instance). Each problem is presented with the set as the "whole" and then the whole decomposed into unit fractions.
There are 4 pages of task cards (4 per page), a student recording sheet, and an answer key, in addition to the note page and student practice worksheet.
I have used these with a group of above level fifth graders to help them visualize what is happening to a whole when you take a fraction of it. I like the model with the whole as a bar across the top and it helped my students mentally calculate fractional pieces.
