These task cards introduce students to the concept of what fraction of a set means by using division. This activity helps children practice dividing up numbers into equal groups visually, so they can identify included parts of the set using their models. This set starts students off slow, so in EVERY problem the numerator is 1 (hence, there is no multiplying yet. Sets 2 and 3 have varied numerators).
Simply laminate the task cards, copy the recording sheets, and model for students how to circle rows (which are horizontal) and columns (which are vertical).
Students can make several attempts at dividing the number. For kids who are afraid to make mistakes on paper and hate erasing, using markers that they can wipe off can make all the difference in their risk taking and learning.
