### Description

Do your students need practice learning to multiply a fraction by a whole number? These task cards introduce students to the concept of what fraction of a set means by using division. This activity helps children practice dividing up numbers into equal groups visually, so they can identify included parts of the set using their models. This set starts students off slow, so in EVERY problem the numerator is 1 (hence, there is no multiplying yet. Sets 2 and 3 have varied numerators).

Simply laminate the task cards, copy the recording sheets, and model for students how to circle rows (which are horizontal) and columns (which are vertical).

Students can make several attempts at dividing the number. For kids who are afraid to make mistakes on paper and hate erasing, using markers that they can wipe off can make all the difference in their risk taking and learning.

This product contains:

✅ 18 task cards that include directions, an array, and 3 different "fraction of a set" questions on each card
✅ A "Sample Card" to show students how to circle the sets of equal amounts, as well as the correct way to write division number sentences.
✅ A recording sheet

Update: Teachers Pay Teachers has included a digital overlay. This means you can upload it directly to your Google Classroom from this site. Students can use the pen tool to draw boxes around the sets of dots or highlight rows.

This product is part of my Fraction of a Set series. This set is the easiest, and the following two are increasingly more challenging:
Fraction of a Set Cards Set 2
Fraction of a Set Task Cards 3

You can also purchase a bundle of all 3 sets at a greater savings:

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Understand a multiple of 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣, and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole number. For example, use a visual fraction model to express 3 × (2/5) as 6 × (1/5), recognizing this product as 6/5. (In general, 𝘯 × (𝘢/𝘣) = (𝘯 × 𝘢)/𝘣.)
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 × (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 × (1/4).
