Do you remember the caterpillar to count the school days in Kindergarten? Well, now older students can count the school days too, but with fractions! Fractions can be intimidating, but if you review and discuss them each day, they become familiar. Your students will be prepared with the basics by the time your fraction unit rolls around.

Each day of the school year, add a one-eighth piece to the caterpillar. Name and discuss the fraction each day and watch your caterpillar grow!

How long should I spend on Fraction-pillar?
5 minutes or less! Tack it on to your calendar time or morning routine, or use it to kick off your math class. Once you have your routine established, there may be some days when you simply staple the next fourth up and name the fraction. Other days, you may dig a little deeper. Make each day as long or as short as you need.
