Fraction Fun- Chocolate Chip Cookies- The Doorbell Rang: Your students will love learning about the concept of equal or fair shares in this fun introduction to fractions of a set. The activities are based on the book The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. Students create a booklet that follows the story and use chocolate chip cookie manipulatives to divide their cookies fairly between friends. Several teaching posters are also included.
Concepts and skills covered in this activity:
dividing 12 into two, three and four groups
multiplication as repeated addition
identifying parts of a total amount
** Please note that this is a mini-unit and all of the pages included are shown in the thumbnail images. There are 4 pages used to create a booklet, one page of printable chocolate chip cookies, one page that may be used as an assessment and five teaching posters. Not all of the concepts covered have a corresponding worksheet as this is an activity-based project, where concepts can be taught and practiced through the one activity.
You can celebrate the mastery of fair shares by enjoying freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. In my first grade classroom, we end this lesson with a surprise visit from the principal dressed in an apron and delivering a tray of cookies at the door!
