Adding, subtracting and comparing common denominator fractions
comes easily with the four games included in this pack. The mix of numeric and visual representations of fractions helps students create conceptual understanding of fractions and to use their practice in the classroom in real-life situations. All games have been tested in the classroom and modifications have been made based on student and teacher reflections.
Addition and Subtraction Greater than/Less than Top It—
1) Both players place cards and the first one to call out which card has the greater value (or you can choose to play with lesser value) takes both cards.
2) Both players set out their cards and the first player to recognize the sum or difference gets to keep both cards. (players choose at the beginning if they are adding or subtracting). Note: If addition is chosen, improper fractions will be made. This can be used as a good opening for teaching mixed numbers and thus a sheet with blank octagons has been provided for the teacher to laminate and let students color in with dry erase markers.
Addition and Subtraction of Fractions Top Its—
These cards show complete problems that do not involve mixed numbers. The players each place down a card that they have not seen and the first player to recognize which sum/difference is larger gets all of the cards placed.
Nuts about Fractions—
Go around the gameboard and collect enough fraction nuts for winter. Since this board game does not compare fractions there is more than one type of denominator. All of the problems shown represent complete problems. Based on the spinner, students will either simply solve the problem or draw the problem and give the answer. A workmat is provided to help students make equal parts and shade in the fractions given in the problem.
Note: the product is made on European A4 sized paper. If you are printing in a standard US size, choose "shrink to fit" in your printing options. (A4 is very close to letter but the very bottom bit will not print if you don't choose "shrink to fit")
