Fractions: Adding, Subtracting, Mixed Numbers, and Improper
This is a great review lesson for fractions, and should take your students 35-45 minutes, depending on their ability. This lesson is set up for students to review adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and improper fractions and mixed numbers. Students will “visit” four cities during the race: Boston, Austin, Salt Lake City, and Denali. In each city students will complete a series of math problems and a physical task. Once they complete the math problems and task students will check-in with the teacher to check for accuracy. If they are correct, they may move onto the next country. After all four cities are complete, students complete The Amazing Math Race by taking two (very careful) laps around the class room. This activity is set up to review the concepts, but to also get the kids moving.
Included in the download is both color and B&W printing options and an answer key.
This lesson is best for 4th grade, but can be used as an extension activity for 3rd grade and a review for 5th grade.
*Per teacher request, I have also added an alternative first page which includes adding fractions and changing the answer into a mixed number. Along with adding and subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping.*
