This freebie is part of a unit designed to help children explore fractions. If you like it you may want to try my unit: Fractions Building a Conceptual Understanding. Children will learn through their explorations, discussions and your careful questioning children will begin to build their understanding of fractions. Fractional knowledge is challenging for children to truly understand. They can easily learn to jot down a ½ when they see a shaded region, but to apply this knowledge in a variety of situations is the ultimate goal.
The math notebook should be used for the kids to keep track of their questions and discoveries. Encourage children to use drawings, numbers and words to keep track of their thinking and learning.
Discussions with partners, small groups and the whole community will help solidify their understanding as well as clear up misconceptions. Create a learning community where children can make mistakes, question and come to new understandings. When concepts are learned in this way, they are connected in more than one region of the brain, which of course we all know is better than just one area!!
