I created these cut-outs for my grade 6 students to use in their interactive math notebooks, but it would be a suitable activity for students from grade 4, 5 or 6. It is a simple single (1) page document with two large fractions on it that student can cut out. Beside the fractions, students can then glue the included arrows/labels that say "numerator", "denominator", "# of shaded parts" and " of total equal parts".
Have students glue these into their math notebooks after being introduced (or reviewing) fractions and fraction terminology. The activity should take about 10 minutes to complete.
Your students will be grateful for this easy visual reminder about the names given to each part of a fraction, and also what each part of a fraction means.
In my experience with interactive math notebooks, students always tell me that "these are way better than the regular kind of math notebooks!". Try it for yourself and you'll agree!
