This bundle covers fraction, decimal and percent conversions and ordering and includes two PowerPoint lessons; student notes for converting and ordering fractions, decimals, and percents with definitions, examples, and visual models and one worksheet; two student activities; a Fraction-Decimal-Percent Walk-About Activity; and one set of 32 task cards covering fraction operations.
The first PowerPoint lesson is 21 pages and covers changing percents to fractions, fractions to percents, fractions to decimals, decimals to percents and percent to decimals. Each section has a "Your Turn" slide for students to practice individually or in small groups before moving on. There is a challenge question at the end which shows a visual model and asks students to represent the model as a fraction, decimal, and a percent.
The second PowerPoint lesson is 14 pages and guides students on ordering and comparing fractions, decimals, and percents by using a common form to compare and then switching back to the original form when ordering. The lesson includes partner, individual, and group activities that help students master writing numbers in all three forms. Included are problems using 10 x 10 grids, 1 x 10 grids and a table. Answers are included throughout the lesson to check for student understanding before moving on.
Notes for converting fractions, decimals, and percents, with definitions and multiple examples of each type of conversion for students. Visual models using grids are also included, along with a six question learning check on representing the visual models as fractions, decimals and percents in simplest form. These notes can be used for lecture, projected for students to copy, or printed for absent students.
The balloon activity for converting fractions, decimals, and percents is differentiated for two levels of work. Each page contains nine sets of three balloons where students convert the given value to its equivalent value helping students make the connection between fraction, decimal, and percents. The first page includes "average" conversions with some of the beginning questions having two of the three balloons completed. The second worksheet includes higher level thinking with repeating decimals and decimal percents. Since all questions are stand alone, students could be encouraged to finish all problems on both worksheets, then work with a partner, or small groups while the teachers pulls struggling students for more intense instruction.
The Fraction & Decimal pre-unit student activity is super fun and helps students see the connection between fractions, percents, and equivalent forms. I have used this as an opening activity for my 6th grade proportional thinking unit with great results and feedback. It could also work for lower grades after the concepts are taught. Although each project is unique, allowing students to work in pairs or small groups encourages a lot of dialogue on fractions, equivalent forms, simplifying fractions, and percents.
The Fraction Decimal Percent Walk-About gets students out of their seats and engaged in solving fraction, decimal, and percent problems with conversions! Students can work with a partner, small group, or individually to solve the twelve problems on fraction-decimal-percent calculations and conversions between the three.
Finally, a set of 32 task cards help students reinforce and extend their fraction operations skills while having fun. Task cards can be used many different ways and really gives you a lot of options for learning and differentiation. Two sets with different color printing options are included, along with student answer sheets.
