PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Error Analysis is an instructional strategy that helps students to deepen their understanding of concepts and skills. Presented with a math equation that is incorrect, students must evaluate the problem to identify the error and generate an accurate solution.

This practice helps students to:
• better understand the reasoning behind math concepts and skills
• become more effective problem solvers
• identify patterns in math
• construct arguments and critique the reasoning of others (CCSS Elementary Math Practice Standard #3)
• reflect on their work and learn from mistakes

Error analysis is also fun and engaging! Students love to seek out errors and explain why they were made and how to correct them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This resource includes:
• 48 Task Cards
- Tier A (24 cards): a variety of challenging, on-grade level tasks to deepen students' understanding of fractions
- Tier B (24 cards): a series of sophisticated tasks to enrich and extend the same common core concepts and skills
• Problem Solving Mat
• Answer Key
• Tangram template

The task cards come in two tiers to provide different levels of challenge. Both require higher order thinking, but tier B incorporates additional depth and complexity for your academic high flyers. The letter A or B is written in the bottom left corner of each card to help you identify the tier. Cards are also color-coded to facilitate classroom differentiation.

The problem solving mat is a tool designed to be used with each task card activity. The work mat asks students to use a combination of words, numbers, and pictures to clarify their conceptual understanding, articulate their reasoning, and propose alternate solutions. This exercise not only promotes higher order thinking, but integrates reading, writing, and math in a meaningful way.
