The purpose of this lesson is a hands-on activity in which the students discover how a fraction can be greater than 1 using the activity from the pervious lesson. This helps the students discover that a fraction is part of a whole but can be greater than 1 without directly having them memorize definitions. Students work in groups to make predictions about how to complete a complex word problem. Students have an opportunity to predict how things could change the outcome of the problem given different scenerios. This lays the ground work for teaching fractions greater than 1 and mixed numbers. These higher level complex questioning techniques will continue in upcoming lesson while allowing for differentiation to begin. The next lessons in the series will be 4 tier lessons.
