I use this pretest in my 6th grade classroom before starting fractions. This pretest assess the simplest fraction skills to advanced including the following:
~ Write the shaded portion as a fraction
~ Write equivalent fractions
~ Place fractions on a number line
~ Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions
~ Simplify fractions
~ Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
~ Convert fractions to decimals
~ Convert decimals to fractions
~ Draw a model to represent a fraction
This was a great source of data for me and helped me know where to begin our fraction lessons and how to group students. Most of my 6th graders were able to complete this in one class period (50 minutes).
This would be a great pretest for 7th and 8th grade math students as well.
