Looking to get students engaged in math at a completely different level? Students enjoy this activity because it takes the idea of mathematics and integrates investigation and analysis so students see mathematics in a different light. Students must analyze five pieces of evidence to eliminate nine of ten suspects. Ideal as an end of topic activity; students need to perform operations with fractions; ratios and decimals and also interpret their results in a different context. Language arts standards are embedded in this activity because students have to support their claims using valid evidence found from their mathemetical procedures. Students also write an extended response paragraph that details how they came up with their answers, and the mathematical steps taken to prove he suspect to be guilty.
•Engaging mystery format
•Students practice fractions, ratios, and decimals
•Students take their mathematical information and synthesize it to find the murder suspect
•Includes the investigations sheets
•Includes an engaging PowerPoint to get students excited about the mystery
•Language arts standards are with claim and evidence, short response writing.
