Fractions – Reducing to the Lowest Terms – 2 Activities

I have created these task cards to use during my math rotations. They are perfect for small groups, partner work, independent practice, games, scoot, or projected for whole group lessons. When students are working on them independently, I make sure they have mastered the skill or are close to mastery.

This product contains two activities with a focus on reducing fractions to their lowest terms.

The first activity is a sorting activity. Students should lay out the two heading cards, lowest terms and not lowest terms.

• Next, sort the fraction cards under the correct heading.
• Finally, write their answers on the recording sheet.

For the second activity, students are asked to look at the fraction cards.

• Then reduce each fraction to its lowest terms.
• Students will be asked to write their own fraction and reduce it to lowest terms, too.

I suggest printing the student direction pages in color (They do look fine printed in grayscale.), laminating them, and attaching each one to the front of a 9x12 envelope. Print the cards in color or in grayscale on color cardstock, laminate, and cut for student use. Place the cards in a Ziploc bag and keep them and the recording sheets inside the 9x12 envelopes.
