This product may be used stand alone. I have used this when teaching Summer Bridge Programs to incoming 9th grade students when they need to better understand fractions.
The product is a Powerpoint (also in pdf form) which is best used as an Interactive Lecture, where the students and teacher are active throughout the lesson. The lesson begins with a teacher model showing how to draw rectangles on graph paper that illustrate various fractions using color. Several problems are provided for the student to do.
The lesson also includes a teacher model on how to create rectangles and illustrate fractions using colored tiles. (Optionally, the problems could be done on graph paper using colored pencils). The tile problems lead to adding fractions with unlike denominators.
The students may work collaboratively in pairs or groups to determine the answers.
Answers and other suggestions are included in the notes for the various Powerpoint slides.
Materials needed: colored pencils or markers, graph paper, rulers, and, optionally but preferably, colored tiles for each student or pairs of students.
