This activity provides an opportunity for students to discover what effect multiplying and adding has on fractions. After students work through some initial calculations, they reflect on what they have found and identify any noticeable patterns.
This activity can also serve as an assessment tool after operations with fractions are introduced or as a diagnostic tool before the fractions unit is introduced.
In my experience, this activity takes approximately 60 minutes to complete or can be done over two 40-minute periods.
