This is a complete 12 day+ (200+ pages) conceptually grounded unit. It covers the basics of fractions, proper & improper fractions, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, and fractions of a number.
It contains 166 pages + a 37 page review packet showing the conceptual process for changing from a mixed number to an improper fraction.
This best fits 5th grade, though it can be used in 6th grade.
In this unit students will do the following:
--Review the basics of fractions, reinforcing and deepening concepts of the numerator and denominator through REPEATED area models, arrays, and number lines.
--Deepen their understanding of fraction estimation such as fractions close to zero, fractions, close to one, fractions, just below 1/2, and fractions just above 1/2.
--Be introduced to “3/4 of 20” type problems, learning strategies for how to represent and prove them conceptually.
--Conceptually represent mixed #s and improper fractions and convert between the two forms.
--Find equivalent fractions and being able to represent equivalent fractions conceptually.
--Be fully immersed in real life story problems
Included are the following:
--Notes and answer keys to notes containing suggested problems to use as introduction or review for the particular day
--Worksheets for homework, answer keys to the hw, + answer keys with suggested point values (Also, the keys show how the answers were derived)
--A study guide (practice test) that has an answer key (Students can get extra credit by getting a parent signature.)
--2 tests (with answer keys included) so that retakes are available
--A review packet showing the conceptual process of converting from a mixed number to an improper fraction
This works great as a foundational review before adding, subtracting, or multiplying fractions.
It can be used to differing degrees from 4th grade up to 6th grade (as a review/remediation). I presently find it fitting best as a review in 5th grade.
