This resource is designed to help students understand that when the whole changes, unit fractions change as well. This develops great problem solving skills and flexibility of thinking! This resource includes 3 activities using Cuisenaire Rods, which can be physical manipulatives or online manipulatives (links to free resources are included).
Each activity provides students with a rod that equals one whole, and then students need to figure out the value of all the other rods. Students are asked to draw an example sketch of the rods to provide evidence that supports their answers. They are also asked to identify the pattern and mixed numbers used in each activity.
-Activity 1: When the red rod equals 1 whole, the white rod will equal one half. Students will discover the pattern that the rods are increasing in size by one half.
-Activity 2: When the light green rod equals 1 whole, the white rod will equal one third. Rods will increase in size by one third.
-Activity 3: When the purple rod equals 1 whole, the white rod will equal one fourth. Rods will increase in size by one fourth.
I recommend doing these lessons in small groups, so you can guide students as necessary. My students loved this challenge!
As always, I appreciate your thoughts and feedback!
