This set of twelve double-sided work cards is designed to require students to use their higher level thinking and problem solving skills in real world applications. In order for students to see the relevance of learning mathematical concepts, such as fractions, they need to practice with real world examples and make the connection between their daily school work and real life situations where they will use their mathematical knowledge.
Real World Fraction Work Cards introduce students to a wide variety of situations where they can use fractions. Students will learn how to become a smart consumer, a ‘do-it-yourself ’ kind of person, and a critical thinker. They will use fractions with money, measurement, time, and other real world situations.
Level 1 is basic comparing and ordering fractions or writing the standard form of a fraction when given a visual.
In Level 2, students add and subtract fractions and whole numbers, with and without regrouping.
Level 3 features a multi-step problem which usually requires the student to combine several of the basic operations to find the answers to real world problems.
Level 4 is the most difficult and comprehensive level. The students use more than one operation to solve a multi-step fraction problem, which ties into another area of mathematics in a real world way.
