This lesson focuses on the concept of expressing time as fractions thus addressing one of the real-life application of fractions. The lesson is designed as an exploratory lesson where students explore the answer to the question - How can we express minutes in an hour as a fractional number?
This lesson consists of detailed instructions for an Engagement, Exploration, and Explanation.
In the Engagement the teacher first check on students’ prior knowledge and understanding of being able to read a clock-face and relating time to fractions.
Then they explore this concept further and try to find answers to the question.
The lesson concludes with students presenting their answers to the class, and the teacher giving an explanation on adding fractional numbers to show how different fractions of time adds to a whole hour and the fractional numbers relating to these fractions of time add to 1.
This lesson works well as a follow up lesson to Fractions of Pie
where students learn to see how a circle is divided into fractions. After this lesson on Fractions of Time students should become more familiar with fractions within circles.
