My students recently learned about fractions of a set. In order to connect this understanding to the new topic of probability, we did this Smartboard activity together. Students can answer the questions in math notebooks or on white boards and discuss as a whole group or in small groups. Students will first identify the fractions of a set. Then, they will think about how the denominator of a fraction relates to the number of possible outcomes. They will use their understandings of fractions to create a fractional probability of an event. This was a great review of fractions! You can even extend it by asking if the event is likely, unlikely, or certain.
