We read fairytales to our students and discuss the basic needs of a fairytale mike magic or the occurance of the number 3. But to really drive it home, Have the students choose their favorite fairytale and change something about it. There are a number of great fractured or twisted fairytales out there, but none are as great as the ones your children will write!
This is a lesson plan for a writing project. It hits the common core standards (especially the reading standards where students need to compare two similar stories). I have used this in my classroom with second graders and got great results!
