Product Description
This is the holiday collection of engaging, colorful photographs and illustrations to use as picture prompts when working in Framing Your Thoughts throughout the school year. Use these slides at any point in your FYT instruction. They’re great for brainstorming simple subjects and/or predicates, and just as helpful when working on complex sentences and/or paragraphs. No matter what skill or Unit you’re working on, you can use these visuals to spark your students’ creative writing.

This set of photographs and illustrations are holiday themed. There are a total of 50 slides (most holidays have multiple slides), along with sample sentences for each slide (**SEE PREVIEW**). Holiday themed slides included are:

• Patriots Day
• Columbus Day
• Halloween
• Election Day
• Veteran’s Day
• Thanksgiving
• Hanukkah
• Christmas
• Kwanzaa
• New Year’s Day
• Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
• Valentines Day
• President’s Day
• St. Patrick’s Day
• Earth Day
• Memorial Day
• Flag Day
• Graduation Day
• Fourth of July
• Summer Vacation

This is an easy no–prep activity to use in a variety of ways, but I’ve found it works best as a way to spiral back to revisit previously learned skills. I most always present students with the sentence formula I’d like them to use to create their sentences by either:

• Manipulating the symbol cards on the pocket chart.
• Writing the sentence formula on the board.

My students are most challenged when they are asked to create sentences on their own, using their own formula, by using any of the symbols/skills we have already learned. Most always, the students accept the challenge and they always totally exceed my expectations (as students will always do)!

Once students create their sentences, they are further challenged to use sentence mobility to create several new sentences with the same words/phrases. It’s after they become familiar with sentence mobility that they become proud of their writing and begin to understand what we mean when we ask them to either “edit” or add “voice” to your writing, and make it your own! Which they always do!

I especially love to add this activity to my Sub Plans, as students most always are totally engaged in the writing process through choosing a sentence formula, practicing sentence mobility, and challenging themselves to get everything they’ve learned into a fantastic sentence. Once they’re able to write a complete and correct sentence, they are again challenged to not only write a sentence for their picture prompt, then a paragraph, and finally a story. The uses of this very basic yet sophisticated learning tool are endless!

I use these photos in a variety of ways, including:

• Creating sentences verbally (no writing)
• Creative Writing Centers
• Literacy Centers
• Small Group Intervention Groups
• Writing Journal Activity
• Whiteboard Activity
• Have students work in pairs to create sentences/stories
• Enrichment
• “Do Now” Activity
• “Morning Challenge” Activity
• Early Finishers
• Extension Activities (differentiation opportunity)
• Homework (Our students have access to the Photo Library on Schoology, but you can simply print out any photo in grayscale and send it home for a homework assignment).
• Assessment
• Tutoring
• Sub Plans
