Learning a language through music is an effective way to encourage students, to aid memory and to offer a cultural aspect to a language class. In my French Immersion class, we listen to and study one francophone song every week. We listen to the song 4 or 5 times in a row and the students fill in the missing lyrics on the lyric sheet I provide for them. We then correct it interactively as a class and proceed to engage in various grammar and vocabulary activities based on the lyrics of the song.
I have prepared packages for several francophone songs that I have used--and that have been successful--in my classroom. This pdf package of Yannick Noah's 'Aux arbres citoyens' includes an introductory title page, a 'fill in the missing lyrics' page, a verb exercise based on the song lyrics, an activity based on the song's adjectives, and an accompanying answer key for all three activities.
GRAMMAR TOPICS EXPLORED:
- verbs: present tense
