This unit is developed for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It contains the following items:
A critical reading test
Discussion/Quiz questions for Chapters 1-19
5 different essay prompt choices of various levels and topics for differentiation, extension, etc.
A final reading comprehension test
Directions for a theme analysis group project
A study guide
An editable student handout for the unit expectations
An editable student handout for struggling students
Teacher notes for introducing the unit
A vocabulary list for students
A group-work contract for students
A group-work critique form for students (Note: These two items are sold together as Group Work Contract and Critique)
Resource suggestions for advanced and struggling students
This naturally follows my Romantic poetry unit; however, it works well on its own. Students in particular seem to really enjoy the group project as it not only thoroughly assesses their understanding of theme but allows them to have fun with the book in an interactive way. I do not limit students on what the final product can be so long as it conveys the theme creatively.
The answer key for the test, the vocabulary quizzes, and the rubric are not included in this unit.
