Dorothy Frayer and her colleagues at the University of Wisconsin designed a graphic organizer to help students have a more complete understanding of new words they encounter. Their work can be found at wvde.state.wv.us
Students are intended to write the new word in the middle of the page. They then find a definition for the word adding it to the organizer. After they have an understanding of the concept, they can then explain it with examples and non-examples based on the definition. Finally, students can either draw or write characteristics of the word to solidify their understanding.
These vocabulary charts can be used across all content areas to enrich students' understanding of new words across the curriculum. I hope that these will be useful to you!
