At the end of Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty, students learn about the 5 stages of the grieving process. To assess their understanding, students must then teach that process to another audience.
This final assessment is a little trickier on the teacher end: checkpoints, rubrics, etc. need to be created on the spot. However, student engagement is very high because of their level of choice. Authentic assessments are rare, and we felt like this one worked in my classroom.
One class created a whole-class video. We split up into teams: scripting, directing/filming, set design, actors, editors, etc. Their final video product was sent to the audience of their choice.
Another class created small group presentations for their specific audience.
