The main text for this unit is "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" by Frederick Douglass. However, I have included multiple outside sources to help engage students such as video clips, music, art, group work, group discussions, etc. Included is the list of texts and materials (outside sources), unit calendar, final project with all rubrics, and lesson plans that expand across a five week time period.
As students are reading the narrative, they will also be working on a research paper pertaining to a topic surrounding the enslavement of the African people in the United States that interests them. Some examples I gave my students were slave abuse, slave trade, family life, religion, or music.
Also included are weekly vocabulary lists and quizzes that include words for the SATs and words students will find in the readings we're doing in class.
Please know that you can alter this for any level; I made this unit for and 11th grade American Literature course. All lesson plans are in accordance the the MA State Frameworks. For every student handout, there is also a teacher handout with all of the answers.
I hope you enjoy teaching this unit and much as I did!
