Students read excerpts from Frederick Douglass' memoirs of his escape from slavery and answer 10 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate.

Sample questions include:
-Inferring from the text, and with at least a 2 sentence answer, why couldn't FD keep his wages when he worked in the shipyards?
-Discuss the risk FD took when he got on the train going North.
-Why do you think FD said he felt as miserable as a murderer fleeing from justice?
-Where was the most dangerous place for fugitives? Why do you think that was that so?
