This student handout and rubric sets out the student activities for a 4-day classroom activity on The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass-- that involves little teacher prep, minimal curriculum time, and Socratic Seminar that fully engages students in both the inner and outer circle. My students use personal devices, so I have highlighted the directions that are specific to personal devices so that it can be easily found and replaced with traditional Seminar note-taking.
You can find my strategy for grading a Socratic Seminar on TpT, which includes an handout of tips for kids using personal devices in the outer circle. I have kids use a backchannel chat room to engage in a silent dialogue in the outer circle instead of taking notes. Tips for students are included in that rubric.
I begin the project by doing Task 1 on a Friday independently or as a whole class, then spend Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in Socratic Seminar on the book. The "extra credit" activity could easily be turned into a whole class writing assignment for Friday. It's a snap!
