This product contains four items:
1. Anticipation Guide: This anticipation guide gets students to think about issues related to powerful governments and controlled societies. It provides space for students to explain three of their responses in detail.
2. Notes on "The Book" by Emmanuel Goldstein: Winston reads The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism (allegedly) by Emmanuel Goldstein, which explains the principles on which Oceania was established. While these concepts are important, the students often become bored by this section. These notes offer a "Reader's Digest" version of it and present all of the relevant concepts. Use this to supplement or replace reading this section.
3. Rights and Freedoms Writing: Students describe the rights and freedoms that they value the most and what they would do/how they would feel if they were taken away.
4. Open-Book Test: This open-book test provides three essay questions that encourage students to think deeply about George Orwell's 1984 and relate it to their lives. The prompts is printed twice on the sheet so you can save paper when you make copies.
