This free writing activity for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade is a fun way for students to create a list of their favorite items to use during writing workshops throughout the school year. Using the templates that I have included your students will create lists of their favorite things from home and from school, as well as conduct an interest survey.
These pages will serve as an excellent resource during daily writing lessons or journal writing sessions. Writers tend to use generic words like place, friend, toy, etc.. If they keep these pages as a resource in the writing notebook, they can refer them throughout their writing and use terms like bedroom instead of place or room, Mikey instead of friend, Barbie doll instead of toy, etc.
While brainstorming ideas or topics for writing workshop or journaling, students could use these as a resource. A picture or themselves in their favorite place or playing with their favorite toy will stimulate a multitude of writing ideas.
