Students create a clay and bead model to visualize how an increase in cell size changes the ratio of surface area to volume.
This activity is adapted from a lesson in the PBL Biology Unit "Breakdown" which asks students to investigate the cause of a patient's poor health as they learn about macromolecules, enzymes, and cells.
- Understand that cells are the basic structures of all living things with specialized parts that perform specific functions.
- Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including their complexity, and compare and contrast scientific explanations for cellular complexity.
- Investigate and explain cellular processes, including homeostasis and transport of molecules.
