Read Across America and Dr. Seuss birthday is a great time to integrate language arts with social studies. When students read books from different states, they will quickly see how the climate and terrain influenced the stories that they read.
I would suggest that you take a little time now to begin gathering some books from different states. You can talk to your librarian for some extra help or send a note to parents asking for help. There is one included with this packet.
REGIONS OF UNITED STATES - Read by Regions:
Divide your class into the regions of the United States. Have these groups read books from their region. There are book tub signs for the regions included, too. Students will fill out a 3 clues about the books that they read. It is helpful if you model it the first time. There is an example for the book, Dancing with Manatees included.
ACTIVITY: Play 3 Clues:
This activity is a great way to check for understanding and work on team building skills. Directions for the activity are included in the packet.
Included with this packet are:
--"Oh the Places We Have Read" - 3 clues worksheet
--Regions - book tub signs
