End of the Year Reflection WritingThis is a great way for students to reflect on their school year. Below is how I implement this in my classroom and I have seen thoughtful responses throughout the year.

Step 1: Bring students together as a group and reflect with a discussion about the school year. Begin by naming each semester or quarter’s main objective (i.e. our first quarter is always Building a Community of Kind Learners). Talk about the books you’ve read, the field trips attended, funny memories, exciting projects and guest speakers. Allow students to guide this conversation.

Step 2: Students independently complete the graphic organizers that are included in this resource. I always tell students that they can take a clipboard and go anywhere in the room that allows them to think deeply and reflect on their school year.

Step 3: Usually the next day, students use their graphic organizers to write a reflection essay. This could be in the form of a letter or formal essay.

This activity is handy when I am meeting with parents at the end of the school year as well as when I am writing report cards/progress reports for each student. It is great to have a look at what their perspective is about their own learning!
